Hot Topic: Should the Supremes Serve for Life?

Currently, members of the U.S. Supreme Court are able to serve for life, if they so choose.

Supporters of life tenure say that it insulates the justices against political pressures and protects the independence of the High Court.

Critics note that the U.S. Constitution does not mention life tenure, but rather that justices can serve under "good behavior" and that lifelong service can lead to justices remaining on the bench well after their mental or physical fitness deteriorates.
